One Couple, Double the Therapy

Don and Marie Hamilton

The Hamiltons admitted to Providence Pointe Healthcare for both expected and unexpected reasons. Marie Hamilton has planned a total knee replacement for the end of October. A week before her surgery, she noticed that her husband Don was experiencing stroke-like symptoms and she rushed him to the hospital. The proper procedures were started immediately as he was admitted to the hospital. The following week, she showed up for her scheduled surgery.

Three days later, I would normally be discharged home. But with my husband still in rehab and no one else at our house, the discharge planner said that it would not be safe for me to go home alone. She said that neither my husband nor I could care for either ourselves or the other, and neither of us were allowed to drive to the necessary daily rehabilitation appointments that our conditions required. Our options were: hire three sitters a day for eight-hour shifts, paid for out-of-pocket, with a home health organization coming into our home for rehabilitation. Or, we could go to [Providence Pointe Healthcare] where Medicare would pay for the first 20 days of our stay and all of our rehabilitation.  My husband and I shared the same room. We were helped to our meals, which were delicious, until we could manage on our own. The nurses were wonderful in watching his vitals and caring for my incision and bandage changes. All our meds were provided. The first day, the entire staff called us by name! The staff was always cheerful, encouraging, and went out their way to help meet any need we had. In regards to rehab, I cannot say enough about these dedicated therapists! One therapist is assigning you, and she will evaluate and set your goals.  You continue to see her each time. At other places, you may never see the same person twice. Their therapists take a personal interest in your recovery. They take the time to answer any question you may have about your therapy and why you need to do a particular activity.
